Need a little “Lift” without surgery?  

We all age in appearance in different ways. There are wrinklers, sinkers and saggers.  Me?  I’m a sagger!

Some people can pull off a droopy face, but if you’re not one of them, let me tell you why Ultherapy is my favourite treatment.   Ultherapy is an award-winning treatment for skin tightening and the only FDA approved treatment in existence for a “lift” indication.  It’s in a league of its own and this article will explain why.   

The goal of all skin tightening procedures is to cause controlled injury to the skin to induce collagen denaturization, and subsequent neocollagenesis.  In layman’s terms what that means is that the purpose is to trigger a healing response that will produce new collagen.  Simplifying this as much as possible, the greater the injury, the more dramatic and long-lasting the result will be.  Devices vary greatly but I will attempt to say a lot in a few words:

1. Lasers:  The depth of penetration with lasers is very precise but superficial.  The injury that is created is limited to about 1 mm, give or take.  Some devices deliver the energy in a non-invasive way for subtle results.   Others are ablative meaning that there is some downtime involved.  More dramatic results are possible, including a nice resurfacing of the skin.  Results, in any case, will be superficial.
   
   
2. Radio Frequency:  The first treatment that utilized radio-frequency to cause injury was Thermage.  Radio Frequency waves injure the dermal layers of the skin with bulk heating and the depth of injury is variable.  Temperatures high enough to cause skin tightening will usually be concentrated at 1.5 to 2 mm with some residual heat penetrating up to 3.5 mm.   More recently, other radio-frequency devices have been introduced, but none can control the depth of injury precisely.  Thermage was still recognized as the gold standard in non-invasive skin tightening until Ultherapy was developed.  
   
   
3. Ultherapy: It is the newest modality designed to tighten skin, uses focused ultrasound to deliver controlled injury.  Because ultrasound allows us to see beneath the surface of the skin we can safely injure deeper than any other treatment within the aesthetics industry.  In a single treatment Ultherapy can cause precise injury at three depths:

  1)   At 1.5 mm for superficial tightening where it is needed.

  2)   At 3.0 mm to injure deeply into the dermis. 

  3)   At 4.5 mm to bypass the dermis and injure the muscle beneath known as the SMAS.  The only other way to injure the SMAS in a    
        controlled way is with a surgical facelift.  Thus, while Ultherapy cannot promise facelift results, it is as close as you can get to a facelift  
        without going under the knife.

Ultherapy is cutting-edge, but it involves no cutting at all.  It is a non-invasive treatment that allows you to have the treatment during the day and go out for dinner that very night.  Results develop gradually as new collagen forms over a few months after the treatment. Unlike surgery there is no risk that you will look like anyone other than yourself, only a younger version of yourself.
