Unwanted body hair is one of the most common concerns we hear about during the summer months, so we're answering all of your questions about laser hair removal in this month's blog post. Learn about this incredible, permanent solution to unwanted body hair, and enjoy summer with silky, smooth skin. >>
Research estimates that 85-90% of women and nearly 50% of men have unwanted body hair. As a result, people have been shaving, waxing, plucking, and trying everything else under the sun for decades, and it’s a cumbersome and costly chore.
The one issue with all those methods is that they yield temporary results with pesky hairs (and often ingrown hairs) returning days later. Imagine the freedom of never having to shave or wax again and having smooth, hairless skin forever.
Sounds pretty life-changing, right? It’s possible by beginning laser hair removal at Skinpossible. In only four to eight treatments, you’ll be hair-free. (Think about all the time and money you’ll save!)
Here are some other benefits of laser hair removal:
While these are all wonderful results, they are permanent, so there are some things you should know before deciding if this is the best treatment for you.
Our skin professional, Linda Rogers, is here to answer all your questions. But first, let’s break down how laser hair removal works.
Contrary to popular belief, laser hair removal doesn’t target the hair itself — it targets the hair follicle. Basically, the laser delivers energy under the skin’s surface to permanently destroy the hair follicles, thus disabling their ability to grow hair by targeting the pigment of the hair.
Skinpossible has more technology than any other clinic in Calgary. We offer multiple wavelength lasers to safely and effectively treat all skin and hair types, including IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Machine), Alexandrites, ND Yags, or Diodes. We will choose the best laser depending on your hair type and skin pigment.
We offer laser treatments for the following areas:
If an area you’re interested in having treated is not listed, please contact us for a consultation.
“The main difference between laser and light is the type of light that’s used. A laser is more selective and very high energy and can focus on the hair. It is less focused on the surrounding skin. Light technology involves Broadband Pulsed Light that targets the hair but is also delivered to the surrounding skin. Both are effective at damaging the root of the hair. However, darker skin types are a better candidate for laser since it’s able to hone in on the hair and less on the skin.”
“Due to our range of medical grade technology at our clinics, we can successfully treat ALL skin types. There may be a few contraindications to treatment such as recent sun exposure and current or recent use of photosensitizing medications. However, we will discuss these during a consultation to determine your candidacy.”
“There is less and less hair that grows back with each treatment. Some people may notice a visible reduction after one treatment, but it can take a few treatments for some people to see the reduction visibly. It takes an average of 6 treatments to see a 60%- 90% reduction in the treatment area.”
We usually recommend four to six treatments, spaced six to 12 weeks apart. However, some people require eight or more treatments.
Hair finer or lighter in colour will usually require more treatments than thicker, darker hair.
The key to increasing your success and reducing the number of treatments is to invest in high-quality treatments and return for your treatments in a timely manner.
“There is a certain level of discomfort involved in all laser hair removal, but most people are surprised at how quick and easy it is.”
Most people describe the feeling as being like an elastic band snapping against your skin. It’s very tolerable.
“Laser or light cannot effectively treat blonde, gray, or red hairs. However, it can treat dark blonde and light brown hairs.”
So, if you have light hair, you unfortunately might not be a candidate for laser hair removal. And if you have blonde hair and are a candidate, be prepared to come in for more treatments than someone with darker hair. This is because If the hair is very light or white, there is nothing for the energy to see.
This is because the darker the hair, the easier it is to kill the follicle.

For light hair, ask to use our Sciton BBL. The IPL machine can see lighter and finer hair better than other technologies. With BBL, we can remove fine hairs left behind by other lasers. As long as there is pigment in the hair, the Sciton BBL will be able to see it. The BBL is suitable for most skin types, except very dark skin.
For darker hair, we recommend using our Elite ND Yag laser. It can safely and effectively treat fair, darker, and tanned skin.
“Now!! As long as you’ve been wearing SPF for four weeks before your first treatment.”
You must do your part with hair removal to ensure the treatment is successful.
